The IBF Research Group, part of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources (BNR) Program is seeking an applied economist to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the EU agriculture and food system. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to high-impact policy advice, addressing critical sustainability challenges such as climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity, and food and nutrition security at the science-policy interface.

At the IBF Research Group, we don’t just model future scenarios—we help shape real-world decisions. Our work directly supports implementation of the EU Green Deal, the Farm to Fork Strategy, and other transformative policies aimed at sustainable land use, food security, and climate resilience. As a part of our team, you will:

  • Engage in applied policy advice that informs national governments, EU institutions, and international organizations.
  • Be at the forefront of translating scientific insights into actionable solutions, influencing policies that make a tangible difference for society and the environment.
  • Collaborate with leading experts recognized as Top 1% highly cited researchers and contribute to high-profile international research and policy projects such as LAMASUS, BrightSpace, and SWITCH.

Main Tasks and Responsabilities

  • Enhance the agricultural sector representation in GLOBIOM.
  • Conduct policy-relevant analyses of agricultural policy interventions, assessing their impact on land use, biodiversity, and other sustainability metrics.
  • Deliver policy briefs and reports to EU decision-makers and publish findings in leading peer-reviewed journals.
  • Expand the group’s impact by developing new areas of expertise, building networks, and securing funding for future research.
  • Represent IIASA at international conferences, workshops, and high-level stakeholder events.
